Carpet recycling now is very necessary and important. Carpets are widely used in industrial and commercial facilities as well as in residential fields. According to the data provided by CARE (Carpet America Recovery Effort), in the United States alone, an estimated 5 billion pounds of carpet are discarded every year. Carpet poses waste management problems – due to its bulky size, it consumes large amount of landfill space whilst landfill capacity continues to decline. Incineration is also not a recommended solution because it releases toxic chemicals into the air, resulting in air pollution. Carpet usually is composed of two parts, the face fiber and the backing. The face fiber is the part of the carpet that you see and walk on and it can be made from different materials, the common fiber types are Nylon, Polypropylene (also known as olefin), PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), Wool, Acrylics and PTT (Polyethylene Trimethylene Terephthalate). The backing is mostly latex and PVC (polyvinylchloride).
