Carpet Recycling

Carpet recycling now is very necessary and important. Carpets are widely used in industrial and commercial facilities as well as in residential fields. According to the data provided by CARE (Carpet America Recovery Effort), in the United States alone, an estimated 5 billion pounds of carpet are discarded every year. Carpet poses waste management problems – due to its bulky size, it consumes large amount of landfill space whilst landfill capacity continues to decline. Incineration is also not a recommended solution because it releases toxic chemicals into the air, resulting in air pollution. Considering these facts, there is social necessity and responsibility to recycle and reuse post-consumer carpets.

Carpet usually is composed of two parts, the face fiber and the backing. The face fiber is the part of the carpet that you see and walk on and it can be made from different materials, the common fiber types are Nylon, Polypropylene (also known as olefin), PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), Wool, Acrylics and PTT (Polyethylene Trimethylene Terephthalate). The backing is mostly latex and PVC (polyvinylchloride).

The recycling process of post-consumer carpets varies with different face fiber materials, but size reduction process e.g. cutting large pieces of carpet into smaller sizes is often needed in most recycling processes. Shredded carpet can be directly used as cover materials at landfills. With further washing, separation, drying processes or other chemical procedures, scrap carpet can be used in manufacturing new products like composite lumber, automotive parts, stepping stones etc. There are even efforts undertaking now to recover the energy content from old carpet as they are made from crude oil.
